The best thing you can do for yourself is save your money. Most anywhere you go, even with schooling, will make you work your way into the bar. You might start as a busser, server, or bar back. The stuff you will learn at bartending school, you can teach yourself at home in a day.
Learn the names and qualities of different types of liquors. Learn the different bar tools (types of glassware and such). Learn some basic drink recipes (screwdriver, white russian, martinis, cosmos...etc.) Go buy a bottle, 1 oz jigger, and a pour spout and practice pouring and counting to 4 to fill up the jigger.
Learn some flair. At the very least it will make you feel comfortable handling the equipment and it will give you an edge above everyone else you work with who wants in on the bar.
I recently changed jobs, where I had to prove myself all over again. I served for 3 months and then skipped ahead of 4 other people and went straight into the bar. My flair experience set me apart from everyone else and helped me get behind the bar. That, and I made sure that my managers knew where I wanted to be and that I was dedicated to get there. _________________ Brad Kaplan

Hi Brad,
That seems like a good answer for people who are very well motivated except wouldn't a little training be better than no training at all? At least that way you could put down some " school " training on your resume and get some experience or practice makming drinks behind a bar so when you get a chance you're more prepared? I mean as long as you don't think you're amazing just cause you've taken a basic mixology bartender course.
Also, you mention learning flair bartender skills. How did you learn and what would you reccommend to me if I wanted to become a flair bartender? How has it helped you etc.
Thanks
I personally dont think you need a bartending school experience to work in a bar. Yes it might look good on your cv but as posted before, you can learn all them things over the internet in 1 day. Learn your basics and have the 'gift of the gab' to sell yourself and make the bar manager give you the opportunity to work there. If your passionate enough to bartend then you will land a job. That personally was my experience. I went on holiday, watched bartenders flair and loved it. I was hooked on flairbartending and wanted to do it. I then handed my 'Office' CV into a few bars and restaurants, got a call or more of a break and started from there. That might of been luck, but theres no harm in trying!
~Good luck getting a job though mate
