Wasn't sure if this was talked about, but recently I went to a restaurant with some friends for a birthday and ordered a top shelf Long Island (since becoming a b-tender, I almost always go top shelf). I tried the drink and about gagged when i tasted the tequila. Shocked I asked the server why the bartender added tequila, and she said thats how they make them their. I've always heard that the ingredients are your Vodka (Absolut), Gin (Tanqueray), Rum (Bacardi), Triple Sec (Cointreau), then mixed with s/s and Coke. And if you want the tequila added, you ask for an Electric Long Island. I make all mine without the Tequila. So, anyone wanna share how they drink/make yours?

ok i had a falling out with my old boss over this one, i have always thought that a long island was 5 spirits, vodka, rum, gin, triple sec, and tequilla. but my old boss always said it didnt have the tequilla, having done a little research into the matter, i have found that more often than not tequila is added, but some of the time it wasnt, personnally i always use tequila as that is how i was shown first. but i guess its different strokes for different folks.

I learned to make lomg islands with tequila. I do believe it is generally made this way. Of course, drink recipes will vary from one bartender to another, one region to the other. I have met a number of folks who don't like the tequila in it. I would say 1 out of 5 of my customers don't like thier LIT with tequila. I have got into the habit of asking the customer which way they drink it now. But it is my understanding that the original recipe contains tequila, its been this way at all the bars have worked in. T

Interesting......this topic came up yet again in my world. I just got hired at a new club in town and we had our first bartender meeting a couple days ago. and this was brought around. we all want consitency in all our drinks so guests can expect the same taste from each of the bartenders and we all voted to 86 the tequila from our long islands.,....unless its requested....

However, when our teacher was questioned about that he did say that some people like it with tequila, but that as "the bartender", it was "your call", [u:66988aafbe]unless[/u:66988aafbe] specifically requested Smile[/color:66988aafbe][/b:66988aafbe] Wink

OK ONCE AND FOR ALL HERE IS THE 411 ON LONG ISLANDS
they wer originally made with DARK rum,tequila(white or gold),triple sec, and gin an EZ acronym to remember that is Dont Touch That Girl get it!
Vodka is added for no reason other than to soften the bottom line price it was also originally made with limeade(lime flavored lemonade with pulp )obviously unavailable in a barhence the s/s mix
my little variation on this classic(btw i use pre-mix in my bar)is to add just a touch of OJ bout an ounce makes a huge difference i think and my customers agree
other variations are
Electric Ice-T- 1/2 pre-mix,1/2 blue curacao+7up
Neon Ice-T - 1/2 premix, 1/2 rasp sour+ ginger ale
Tropical Island Ice-T - 1/2 premix, 1/2 banana liquor+ pineapple juice
try these out they are solid Cool

Orginally receipe of Long Island have tequilla, some bars do not make dirnks with over 2 oz of alcohol, and some states dont allow it, so they leave out the 1/2 oz of tequilla since must people dont like it.

We all know if you ask 5 bartenders in 5 bars how to make a LIT, you'll probobly get 5 different methods. The way I always did a LIT was without tequila....if the coustomer wanted tequila a coached them to ask for a Texas Tea (I made that up on the spot and people still call them that 10 years later) Teach them how to ask for it in when they come to you.
